George V. Arth & Son
Client: George V. Arth & Son
Description: This logo is the first step in an ongoing process to rebrand and refresh the image of George V. Arth & Son, our family owned autobody shop in downtown Oakland, California. Much of the business's existing promotional materials and printed material is woefully out of date. Part of the process of this rebrand will be to bring the shop's identity to the web with a new site highlighting its 130+ years of experience and service to the East Bay community. Additional images will be uploaded and added as the project continues.

Mens Leadership Conference
Client: Oregon State University Memorial Union Program Council (MUPC)
Description: This wordmark was created for the first annual MUPC Mens Leadership Conference, which took place in 2008. The clients asked for a wordmark that had connotations of professionalism and masculinity, but not overly so. They also asked for a wordmark that would work for future conferences by being easily adapted with new colors and dates. The wordmark was featured on a number of posters, buttons, ballpoint pens, and event programs which were handed out to the attendees.
Recognition: Second place prize, promotional campaigns category. ACUI (Association of College Unions International) 2009 conference.

Portland Art Center
Client: Art 424, Visual Identity Systems, Fall 2007
Description: This course assignment asked us to research a Portland area non-profit agency and develop a hypothetical rebrand that could be used to invigorate the organization and increase their prominence in the community. I worked on researching the Portland Art Center (PAC), which unfortunately is now defunct due to a lack of funding. Nevertheless, it was quite an involved process that included researching the mission of the PAC, its target audience, its goals and its limitations, and designing a new brand that would work well within all of those constraints.
Engine Driver Coffee Company
Client: Art 427, Package Design, Winter 2009
Description: This course assignment asked us to create and brand an imaginary company and product line. The company I envisioned was a small, family owned and operated coffee company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Engine Driver Coffee Company creates ten unique hand-roasted blends of coffee that are packaged, shipped to and sold in specialty retailers and independent coffee shops along the West Coast. I wanted the brand to have a classic, American, mid-century feel to it and connote feelings of nostalgia, honesty, and reliability. As part of the assignment, a brand guidelines manual was created for the company which is pictured below.

Designer Wine Labels
Client: Art 427, Package design, Winter 2009
Description: This course assignment asked us to create two wine label designs based on the life and work of two individual design legends. The pinot gris label is inspired by Tibor Kalman. With Tibor's firm belief in honesty and transparency through design, I created a label in which the customer can read a letter written to them from the winemakers themselves. The winemakers tell the customer all of the good and bad things that happened during the process of making that bottle and how that has affected the final product. Secondly, I designed a label for a pinot noir bottle which was inspired by Lucian Bernhard, the German poster designer. Using paper cutouts and his signature block text, the bottle simply says "wine" in German. This straightforward presentation is reminiscent of the "plakatstil" style which Bernhard helped developed in the first half of the century.

Studio 204 Business Cards
Client: MU 204 Design Studio
Description: These business cards were designed for the 2008/09 group of designers at the MU 204 Design Studio. Each designer's last name was playfully displayed on the front of the card, in a color chosen by that designer. The back of the card simply states the name/address of the studio, the designer's full name and their email address.
Recognition: First place prize, cards and invitations category. ACUI (Association of College Unions International) 2009 conference.

Battle of the Bands & Flat Tail Festival
Client: Oregon State University Memorial Union Program Council (MUPC)
Description: The Battle of the Bands & Flat Tail Festival are back-to-back events put on by the MUPC every year. For the 2009 promotional materials, I worked with a co-worker to design the identity for both events. Our concept involved creating two unique planetary shapes that would represent each event. The shapes were comprised of images related to music, OSU, Oregon, and an eclectic energy. The planetary shapes were used in two ways: both positive and negative forms (silhouettes). This allowed for a wide variety of uses in promotional materials.

The Union Experience
Client: Oregon State University Memorial Union
Description: These cards were handed out to new student employees of the Memorial Union. The message on them spoke of the history within the walls of the Union, and encouraged the new employees to have a strong sense of respect and pride in the work that they do. It included testimonials from past employees and a list of opportunities for further growth and job development.
Recognition: Honorable mention, cards and invitations category. ACUI (Association of College Unions International) 2008 conference.

UHDS Quarterly and Annual Reports
Client: Oregon State University Housing and Dining Services
Description: These reports were designed for UHDS to be distributed internally throughout the organization and to the University's administration. A previous designer had completed the Summer and Fall quarterly reports, and I was asked to pick up where she had left off and finish out the series. Sticking with the same format and style of the previous reports, I attempted to present the data-rich information in an appealing but professional manner. The photos were taken by a professional photographer for UHDS. I worked closely with the marketing director at UHDS to sift through the content and make sure it was clear, concise, and most importantly, correct.

Senior Thesis Project
Client: Art 412 and 428, Contemporary Issues in Design and Senior Thesis Project, Winter and Spring 2009
Description: At Oregon State University, all senior graphic design students are required to complete a senior thesis project. This is a two-quarter process, with a written research paper completed in the Winter term, and visual explorations based on said paper completed in the following Spring term. For my senior thesis project, I chose to focus on the issues related to copyright, ownership and fair use that creative professionals are facing in today's increasingly digital world. My written research paper detailed current issues related to promoting creative work online and how new social networks and distribution systems are choosing to respond to copyright policies and how this affects the individuals who are trying to upload and promote their work online. My visual explorations asked three questions: first, why is creative work so important to protect? Secondly, where do individuals draw the line when it comes to taking and distributing creative work? Finally, how have these issues personally affected creative individuals and where do they see things going from here?

Expressive Typography Collages
Client: Art 326, Expressive Typography, Fall 2007
Description: These collages were created for a course assignment, and involved scouring books for interesting samples of typography. With the found type, I utilized scissors, glue and a photocopy machine to create compositions that were based on principles of gestalt. The handmade quality and nuances of the photocopier provided unique textures.

Now Go Create
Client: Personal project
Description: This art piece is comprised of five years of notes, doodles, sketches and drawings from the notebooks I carried with me throughout my collegiate career. The notes were torn out and glued on top of one another, creating a stack of paper about 30 or 40 layers thick. Using an x-acto knife, I cut out the words "now go create" which is my idea of a solid sense of direction post-college. This was displayed in the Oregon State University 2009 Graduating Art Seniors Show in Fairbanks Gallery.

Holga Photography
Client: Personal project
Description: These photos were taken with a Holga camera while on a trip to Seattle. Not much else to say, other than Holgas are incredibly fun to shoot with as you never really know what the final print will end up looking like.
